UAWA COUNTY

MONTHLY MEETING-

(Special to the Times.) The monthly meeting was held on February 11. Present: The chairman (Or E. B. Boland), and Crs. D. H. Hawkins, G. A. Neill J. S. Paterson, O. E. Smith, and P. T. Weeks. Leave of absence wms: granted to Crs. E. C. Loisel and J. McNeil. The ValuerGeneral advised that consideration of re-valuation of Uawa County would be made after the present year’s work had been disposed of.—Received. Rees Bright, Wan chop and Parker forwarded an opinion on charging orders for native rates.—Received. The District Public Trustee advised that consent to the deviation of road through Mangaheia had been approved, subject to an agreement to mortgage being completed.—Agreed to. The chairman No. 4 District Highways Council (idvised that the Gisborne Borough Council had considered the District Council’s proposals with regard to heavy traffic license fees, and would not accept less than 17.6 per cent, of the fees collected. —ProSised by Cr. Weeks, seconded by Vt awkins', that this Council does nou agree and suggests that the Borough Council he invited to appoint a delegate to attend a special meeting of the District Highways Council.—Carried.

The Mayor of Wellington advised that an appeal for funds for the dependants of the late Lieutenant MoncriefF and Captain Hood was being inaugurated and asking for co-opera-tion —The chairman proposed, seconded by Cr. Neill, that the clerk be authorised to open a subscription list and to publicly notify that the list is at the Council Chambers.—Carried. The poundkeeper’s report showed 27 head of stock impounded during the month.

The Health Inspector reported one case of infectious disease and that, generally, sanitation conditions were good. The electrical engineer’s and county engineer’s reports were adopted. It was proposed by the chairman, seconded by Or. Weeks, that the Tauwhareparat* representatives confer with the engineer with regard to surfacemen in that riding and to make whatever arrangements they consider most suitable—Carried.

. The clerk presented a list of outstanding native rates showing an increase of £489 17s Id over last year. —Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Or. Neill, that the clerk\ he authorised to lodge applications for charging orders for outstanding native rates covering the .ast two years.—Carried. It was proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr. Smith, that the clerk be instructed to demand settlement of all outstanding rates. —Carried. Accounts amounting to £3144 3s were passed for payment. The engineer submitted for approval his monthly report as follows: Main Highways Maintenance; Repair shingle has been put on throughout length of highway where necessary. Surfacemen have been engaged making good shoulders of metalling where worn away and generally improving lengths. Main Highways Construction: Additions to filling at Mangapeka bridge have been carried out with reinstatement of fencing. District roads: Metalling in hand at Takapau has been completed and work is now in hand on Tauwhareparae road. Metalling in hand on Hauiti lias been completed and surfacing of road has been completed to beyond Waimaunui bridge. Shingle surfacing-has been put on rough portions of metalling on Bartram’s Hill and clearing up of channelling and banking on this work has been carried out. Formation work on Kopuatnrakihi road at Mangatuna has been completed as far as funds available J would permit. Shingle for winter repair work is being carted to depot from river at Mangatuna. Placing* of stone wall and improvement to road at Gibraltar Bluff Mangatokerau road has been completed. 1 propose to grant a stone crossing on this work so as to guard against erosion occurring from waterfall. Power grader has been engaged on surfacing main Tauwhnroparae road and work lias been carried out from Huanui junction to near Magamaunu stream crossing. Material has been ordered for the installation of cattle dip at Roto-o-tahi and should ho coming to hand shortly.
