MUSIC AT THE RACES

(To the Editor.)

Bir.—May I lie allowed a few lines in your valuable columns to express my opinion regarding the way in which the City Bandsmen are treated at the summer race meetings. I think it is positively disgraceful that these men are expected to sit in front of the grandstand without the slightestprotection from the sun’s rays, which as we all know, have lieen very severe lately. -If dogs and other animals can be protected at the Show from the elements, surely the bandsmen should be thought of, considering that they are there for the enjoyment of the public, and are human beings, like ourselves ? I believe one or two of the officials of the racing clubs were approached on the subject last week, but without effect, and the result is that the conductor of the hand is in hospital suffering from a slight stroke occasioned by the intense heat. If some of the officials themselves had to sit and play under like conditions they would have some sympathy, and I am convinced that they would nottry it a second time. It seems to ine that something drastic always has to happen before any measures are taken to alleviate discomfort or suffering, and 1 think that the motto •‘Prevention is better than cure” is a very apt one. Hoping that some one else with a little, human sympathy will take this matter up.—l am, Yours etc., FAIR! PLAY.
