SC lENTIST’S ADVICE TO DOMAIN HOARD. “HARDLY SIXTY MINUTES ON THE ISLAND.” (Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 9. The attention given .1° some remarks by Dr A. AY. Hill, of Ivew Gardens, who visited Rangitoto Island on Monday, has been out oi all proportion to the circumstances under which they were made. He was hardly sixty minutes on the island, remarked Mr E. Aldridge, chairman of the Rangitoto Domain Board at its mooting last night. Mr T. Walsh, who officially represented 1 he. Board on clay oeeasion, explained that only the briefest. outline* of fho Board’s polity was.given, as the visitors were; intent on. viewing, certain botanical curiosities on the- island. He explainer] that., commensurate with its duties as a Bonin Board in making the island open to the public, the Board was making a native plant sanctuary. A man who had been a 'few minutes cm the place and had no knowledge of local conditions, should have hesitated br;more “butting in.” It was not leasible to declare the island a sanctuary unless a big patrol force was to Ice employed and, even it it were feasible, it was too late, as the island had been open fo the public for eighty years. Board members declined to take Hill’s advice not to continue with the summit road, considering that, to close the island up for the sake of occasionally scientific purposes, was not reasonable.
