AN UNEASY NIGHT
FORTY-THREE EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS. - CLARENCE CHIMNEYS DOWN IN ALL DIRECTIONS. CRACK IN ROAD AND SUBSIDENCE OF LAND. (PRESS ASSOCIATION! BLENHEIM, May 2. Round about Kaikoura and in the vicinity of the Clarence river bridge tho residents had an uneasy night on Thursday during a series of earthquake shocks, which were mere severe there than in Blenheim district. It is said that forty-three shocks were counted on Thursday night. The worst was at 11.30 p.m. Shakes were felt at intervals also throughout yesterday. and two shocks last night. Reports from Clarence state that eh’mneys are down in all directions. The opinion of residents is that the disturbance centred in the ocean off the coast, a mile south of Clarence. A crack opened along .the coast road, and tho land on the seaward' side of tho crack appears to have subsided. Telephones around Clarence bridge are out of order.
