The Magistrate (Mr. Rawsonl was engaged for over eight hours yesterday hearing charges against 84 Jugo-Slavs for refusing to work on the Stratford-Main Trunk railway, Mr. Selwyn Mays prosecuted fir. d Mr. Ostler defended. Commissioner Cullen said 1800 Ju-go-Slavs had registered in the Dominion. Of these, 425 were on national service and at Matiere had. defied the law and were in rebellicr. Mr. Ostler said the men had nr definite conditions of piecework offered them. If such were submitted they would return to work to-mor-row.
The Crown Prosecutor would net. 'accept this. He said he had to think of other Slavs in the Dominion. It was not a safe policy to give waynow. He contended that the conditions were explained to the men. The Magistrate reserved a $ decision. , Mr. Ostler said he would acme? the men to return to work if the conditions were properly explained according to the regulation. He tcor. up their cause because the new regulations had classed the men as enemy aliens, which they were not, and it was a great injustice to met! who were loyal to the Allies.
