JACK CORNWELL.
BOY HERO OF JUTLAND LAID TO REST WITH HONOR,. Faithful below, ho did hisiduty, And now he’s gone aloft. Dibden’s lines on Tom Bowling were quoted by the Bishop of Barking beside the open grave of John Travers Cornwell, H.M.S. Chester, the boy hero of the Jutland battle, who stood at the post of duty though mortally wounded, at the public re-burial of his poor battle-scarred body in Manor Bark Cemetery, London, on Saturday afternoon, July 29 Jack Cornwell had been buried quietly before in the cemetery. Airs Cornwell could not afford a private grave, and marked with hut a peg and a number the hoy hero lay till Saturday’s tribute to his bravery was paid.
With bands and crepe I colors, troops with arms reversed bore him to his last resting place with honor. For two hours the procession wound along the streets of East Ham. Dense crowds thronging the pavement sweltered in the hot sunshine, children to the fore everywhere. The graye was lined with flowers. After the Bishop of Barking had spoken, Dr Mqpcnamara, Parliamentary Secretary of the Admiralty, said: “1 come to pay my tribute of respect to the memory of a hero and to lay on his grave, in the name of the Royal Navy, a wreath of tender, loving thoughts. 'Boy (Ist class) John Travers Cornwell’ will he enshrined in British hearts so long as faithful and unflinching devotion to duty shall be esteemed a virtue among us.” Three volleys were fired over the grave and the sad notes of the “Last Post” were sounded by the buglers. A large floral anchor was sent by the Admiralty. Admiral Beatty sent a wreath of lilies and carnations, and there was another wreath from the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London.
