GISBORNE RACING CLUB.

SECOND DAY

TAVISTOCK WINS BIG HANDICAP.

PENROE SECURES THE STAKES

Tlio Gisborne Racing Club’s summer meeting was concluded on Saturday, at the Park Racecourse, in hot weather. There was a fair attendance present, and the racing was interesting, although some of the fields were small. The most noteworthy thing about the racing was the wonderful reversal of form shown by Kew in the Second Handicap Hurdles. On Thursday Kew was at the tail of the field almost all the way, and nearly fell over the last hurdle. On Saturday he was taken out at the start, and never left the race in doubt, leading throughout, and winprotest was entered against his running, but the stewards dismissed five protest. Other inquiries ' were held during the day, but for the most part they were trivial, and should not have come before the stewards. Adams, the rider of Despatch Carrier in the Park Handicap on the first day, made a complaint to the stipendiary to the effect that ' he was interfered with by both the other starters in the race. After hearing his evidence it was decided that there I was nothing in the complaint. ) During the day the sum of £14,583 was put through .the totalisator, as against £14,918 for the corresponding day last year, a reduction of £335, making a total for the meeting of £26,723, as against £28,723 last year, or a grand reduction of £2604. THE RACING RESULTS.

Along the back Bravest made an effort, and drew alongside Kew, but the chestnut gained almost a length at the jump, and, keeping well ahead, ran into the straight leading Bravest and Hikahakeke, with Fagot last. This was the order past the post, Kew winning easily by a couple of lengths. Bravest beat Hikahakeke for second place by a length. Time, 3.16.

Mr. Neagle, the owner of Bravest, entered a protest for alleged inconsistent Vunning of Kew. The stewards took evidence, but decided there was nothing boforo them to warrant them taking action.

Riding easy, Purse filler maintained her lead for about si £ furlongs, but then had to give way to Tavistock, while Rupahu also forged ahead. Pursefiller died away badly on entering the straight, while Tavistock and Rupahu fought out a great finish, with Campeador coming hard from the ruck. The lighter weight told and Tavistock was able to maintain his run home, and got in a winner by a couple of lengths, with about the same distance separating second and third. NOTES ON THE RACING

After his good showing on Thursday, Bravest was made a good favorite for the Hurdles, whilst Kew, after hi s poor display on the first day was within a few tickets of Hikahakeke ior outside choice. It was a one-horse race, for from the rise of the barrier Kew never gave his opponents a look At a quarter of a mile from home the others lessened the lead the chestnut had, but it was only on sufferance, for he simply romped in. It was a most remarkable reversal of form on hi s first day’ s running over a quarter of a mile less with only a pound more to carry when he was never prominent. Although the protest was dismissed, the public took exception to the form shown by Kew, and there was a lot of grumbling Lady Multifid had nearly double the amount invested on her in the Maiden to the second favorite Serbia. .The favorite flattered her backers for four furlongs, but Con soon settled the argument once the straight was reached and won handily from the fast-finishing Anxious. The latter was a long way back at one stage of the race, and with a better run would have troubled the winner. Anxious has a bad habit of roving out, which costs her a lot of ground. The public made Multifid a better favorite than Pacific Slope for the Tarulieru Handicap, and he duly landed without much trouble. Surtax showed a vast improvement on his first day's running, leading the field till the straight was reached and beat all but the favorite. Pacific Slope and • Gazette ran very poorly, and were some distance behind the placed horses.

Rupaliu carried three hundred more tickets, or oyer a third of the investments, on him in the Racing Club Handicap than the second favorite, Tavistock. Pursefiller, who was last out, of the barrier on the outside, was shaken up to get the lead after two furlongs had been covered and put some daylight in between her and the next horse, Rupaliu. The black male held her advantage to tli e straight, when Tavistock and Rupaliu wrested the lead from her. The two latter were hard at it till half-way down the straight when the favorite’s big weight told its tale and he was beaten, after running a great race, by a length and a-half. Oampeador came on well at the finish and secured third money from the fast-finishing Kooya, who should run well at Makaraka. Pursefiller finished last, but she was ridden rather injudiciously with big weight on her back.

j’uuu lavume m jem prevailed in the Welter, but it was only after a good .finish with Scorch, who came with a late run. Ti pa tip a showed up more prominently than on the first day and is improving with -racing. Penroe had rather an easy win in the Gisborne Stakes, and caused some surprise by beating Hythread, who was bracketed with her. The finish for the Awapuni Handicap was the best of the meeting, the first fivo horses being in a bunch. Admiral Beatty and King of Athol made the pace very hot to the straight i where Otara, Cleft and Maraetotara joined in the struggle. Buchanan [ rode one of his vigorous finishes on ' Otara and just beat Admiral Beatty and Cleft, with Anxious finishing very fast on the outside just beaten foi; a place. _ King of Athol and Carburetter finished several lengths behind. The latter seems to have lost all form. | Although only four horses started | ■ in the Final Handicap, it was tin heaviest betting race of the meeting and Zeus carried nearly half the money. The public made no mistake, for the favorite won easily, Scorch again running a good race for second place. Waiorewa was sore and finished well hack. 1

Amongst the winning jockeys, A. Watson rode three ■'winners, H. Manson and C. Stowe two, and W. Ryan, Johnston, C. A. and H

Tricklebank, Doerey, Jennings and Buchanan and Goscomb one eacli.

J. iSceats proved the most successful trainer with three wins, W. Olive and M. Chaafe two, and F. Loomb, J. Jones, H. Hickey, A. Dixon, W Quenton, J. Ilpnnah, A. v Adams, A. White, and J. G. Marehbank one each;.

Gazeley sired four winners, Multifid three, ■ Vasco two, and Motor, Sabretache, Signalman, Sylvia Park, San Fran, Penury, and Martian one each.
