RACE FOR A SMILE.
THREE HOURS’ GALLOP THAT BEAT A TRAIN. A Budapest reader of the ‘‘Daily News” sends the story of a thrilling race for a woman’s favor in which two young Hungarian uohles recently figured. The lady is a popular actress who was recently p'aying at Mezo Tur, where the rival nobles paid her attention anti loaded her with gifts. When the day came for departure with the theatrical company for Arad the rivals drove to the station to bid her farewell Each drove a magnificent pair of horses in a light trap, and they had vied with each other in the splendor of their appointments. The carelessly spoken farewell words of the actress, “I’ll, see you again in Arad,” had a startling sequel Tho words were uttered as the train moved off. Instantly the nobles rushed to their horses, and, fired by a cannon impulse, lashed them to furious speed. They had determined to race to Arad. For three and a half hours the horses were urged along the mountain road at top speed. One of the nobles completed the journey safely. The second was not so fortunate, for less than a mile from the station one fo iii.s over-driven horses fell dead and, mad with rage at his rival’s success, be drew hi.s revolver and shot, iI s e.xhau sted co mpa nion. ‘‘All this to win a woman’s favor,” comments the correspondent. “What do you think of tho Hungarian noble race? And what do you think of the speed of the Hungarian railways when horses can beat the train.”
