[UNITED PEESB ASBOCIATir.*' • fWPXBIGBfJ (Received March 8, 5.5 p.mA LONDON, March 8. Advices from Nairobi contain a stirring narrative of heroism and pluck in a remote district south-east of Lake R udolf. Lieutenant Lloyd-Jones, who is in command of the Loiyangarana station, six weeks’ march from Nairobi, started with Rittermaster, a political officer, and five of the King’s African Rifles, a score of camels, and a dozen Somali constables in search of Abyssinian elephant raiders. He discovered the latter strongly stockaded in unknown numbers. Lieut. Lloyd-Jones advanced quickly with 15 rifles, hoping to rush the only entrance to the zareba. Teh robbers failed te respond to a promise that their lives would be spared if they surrendered and the bugles sounded the assault and the soldiers dashed forward. A bugler was hit. then a soldier was killed and finally Lieut. Lloyd-. Jones was shot through both legs. The remaining twelve soldiers retreated, leaving two white officers and three orderlies at the raiders’ mercy. The orderlies offered to carry 7 off Lieut. Lloyd-Jones, but the latter bade them rush the gate, and this they achieved with great gallantry, killing all inside the zareba. Lieut. Lloyd-Jones was now suffering terrible pain and delirium and owing to an inadequate supply of anaesthetics was threatened with lockjaw. 'Through the devotion of two Abyssinian orderlies he was carried on astretcher in 43 days five hundred miles to the nearest medical station and is now recovering in the Nairobi hospital, though he will be crippled for life.
