If we arc re-arrested you must know, and when the news reaches England you must cease work immediately.” Hundreds of Laborites singing Socialist songs farewelled Mr Tom Mann. The “Waterloo Evening Standard” says the deported men entertained Mr Mann at supper and primed him on the South African position, though he did not receive their unanimous support.
The deported men confirm that arrangements are progressing to boycott South African goods. The deported men have issued writs against the owners of the Umgeni. Router’s Johannesburg correspondent says that private cablegrams state that as a result of London conferences the transport workers, wool operatives, and dockers’ unions have agreed as a protest against the Indemnity Bill, not to handle South African imports. Communications are being exchanged with Berlin, the headquarters of the International Trade Union, and Socialist Secretariat.
THE INDEMNITY BILL. WHAT THE STRIKES COST. (Received March 8, 5.5 p.m.) CAPETOWN, March 8. Tho Indemnity Bill has passed the report stage. Mr Merrimnn’s amendment to cancel the banishments was negatived by 73 votes to 29. Tho third reading will be taken on Monday. The Estimates provide £'200,000 to cover the repression of the strikes in July and January, including £177,000 the cost of mobilisation in January.
