CONCILIATION BOARD’S AWARD

The award of the Joint Conciliation Board appointed ‘to inquire into the Newcastle colliery troubles and particularly the miners’ demand for the abolition of the afternoon shift, while refusing to abolish this shift, recognises that the men’s claims are worthy of special consideration. ’ The award embodies a, revised scale of wages for wheelers and surfacemen, carrying an increase of Is to Is 6d. per day. Eight shillings a day is fixed as the minimum rate to any class of colliery laborers.
