MAGISTRATES COURT.

FRIDAY, ApCUST 2. BEFORE MR. \y7aTBARTON, S.M. A statutory first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s., costs (2s), in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. James Third, for allowing the chimney of his residence to ho on fire was fined 10s and costs (7s). Frederick Fiddy and James George were charged, on the information of the Borough Inspector, with being the occupiers of certain stables from which an offensive smell arose. Mr Coleman appeared for the informant. Defendants pleaded guilty. Inspector Ferris gave evidence regarding the charge. Mr Coleman did not press for a heavy penaltyOne of the defendants said it was not a case of personal neglect, but of the failure of an employee to perform his duty.

His Worship inflicted a fine of 10s, costs (7s), and solicitor’s fee (£1 Is). Allen Campbell, of Patutahi, was charged with failing to register four dogs. Mi' Burnard prosecuted, and called Henry .1. Bennett, registrar of dogs for Waikolni, who said that, on June Ist, defendant was the owner of four dogs over the age of six months.

Defendant, who did not appear, was fined 10s, and ordered to pay the fees (£1), with costs (10s), solicitor’s fee (10s), and witnesses’ expenses (11s 3d).
