During a meeting of Waihi miners at Auckland Opera House on Sunday Mr McLennan estimated that 900 or 1000 men had already left Waihi out of a population of 60G0. A resolution was passed; expressing belief in the justice of the cause for which they were fighting at Reefton ajud; Waihi; that the principles of bona fide unions were at stake, and pledging those present to give every' assistance to ensure a speedy victory.
BRANDED AS “SCABS.” ATTEMPT TO WORK A MINE. REEFTON, July 1. The Consolidated Company, with the aid of shift bosses and members of the staff and the survey officer, endeavored to work the Energetic mine to-day . Four shift bosses would not go on shift. Bosses with certificates took the winding engine. At noon all hands employed on the Energetic and Wealth of Nations battery went off duty. Arriving at Reefton the men were very reticent. It is understood the Company are firm in endeavoring to work the mine. The names of the .shift bosses and the staff have been painted upon the Black Point Roacl as “scabs.”
