WORLD’S CHAMPION SPRINTERS.

ASSEMBLED IN SYDNEY.

McLACIILAN ON THEIR STYLES'.

At presnt Sydney is the headquarters of a small coterie of famous runners, and the latest additions thereto are Messrs L. C. MoLaclxlan and W. F. Trembath, of New Zealand, two athletes who have excellent records to their credit. The former is, however, now acting as Trembath’s manager. McLachlta.il' and Trembath form athletic contrasts, the former being 40 years of ago, and of spare build, whilst the latter, who is only 22, is a well-set up athlete. The veteran, however, is still a very fine runner, whilst Trembath has the following performances to his credit:—looyds (on grass), 9 4-ssec; 150yds, 14 4-sseo; 220yds, 21 2-ssec, which is a world’s record, and was put up on the white limestone track at Napier in: 1902. His best time over 440yds is 48 2-ssec, accomplished oil the same day as his world’s record. He rani a half-mile, at Geraldine, N.Z., in Imin 56seo in 1905. Trembath is a middle-distance runner —from 440 to 1000 yards. He first became famous in 1907, when lie won the 440 and 880 yards championships of New Zealand, being then only 18 yems of age. In the same year lie won the. same distance events at the Australasian Amateur Championship meeting held at Hobart defeating Nigel Barker In March 1909, he turned professional, and has since won' all the New Zealand professional championships from 220 yards upwards. In all he has started in 30 three-quarter-mile events, winning 23. His running weight is list 61b. At present a. match over 440yds is in the making between Holway and Trernbaith, and it will probablv take place on Saturday next, possibly at the Agricultural Ground. However, the Rugby League does not appear to bo keen on allowing any more running events' to take place on grounds controlled by it; but if it refuses to sanction such a match, another ground may be engaged. Trembath is willing to put up aside bet of £IOO, and he would have no objection to the match taking place at Maitland or Newcastle. The New Zealander is also prepared to run any professional in Australia from 600 to 1000 yards, Jack Donaldson preferred. Yesterday E. R. Terry anti McLachlan, acting on behalf of Trembath, had a. chat about a meeting between. Donaldson and Trembath over two distances —6OO and BSO yards. Terry stated that a match between Donaldson and Postle over 100 yards was likely to be made, and, if so. he would not be able t.o make any ar./augememts at present about a match with Trembath. Later on, however, say at Christmas time, Donaldson would be prepared to meet the New Zealander over the above distances, for a stake of £2OO. In the event of Donaldson defeating Trembath over fill© shorter distance, he would have to meet him over the SSO yards course. Asked by a "Herald” representative as to his opinion of the merits of the four famous surinters—Holway. Postle, Donaldson and Taylor—Mr McLaehlan said that lie. thought Postle, fit and well, was file fastest of the quartet up to 130 yards. As to style, all four wore beautiful-actioned sprinters, but lie favored Donaldson’s methods, his build being more suitable than the other trio, and his action was a time scissors.movement his hands and legs- working in unison. It is Tremba.tli’s intention to visit England not later than March of next yeas’.
