AEROPLANES AND SUBMARINES.
NOTABLE FRENCH EXPERIMENT
Some remarkable experiments in the detection ot submarines by aeroplanes have been carried out at Cherbourg, France’s great naval station. The aviator, M. Auburn, made two flights. In the first- he ascended 400 ft, and within a few minutes he succeeded in locating two submarines, which were a mile and a half apart, and both well under water. r . , , In his second flight M. Auburn attained an altitude of 1200 ft, and from that height he was able to detect boats that were submerged 18ft and travelling at full speed. , . ~ The airman also demonstrated tne possibility of locating a submarine from a height, of 3000 ft above sea level On the other hand the crews of the submarines were unable to discern the aeroplane at a greater altitude than 1500 ft.
