In sentencing two decrepit individuals, a man and a woman, at the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court, the presiding magistrate, Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., commented strongly on the surroundings in which they had lived. He stated that he had visited their house in connection with an inquest he had been holding, and had found the place in such an abominable condition of filth and rottenness that he had been compelled to hold the inquest outside. He sentenced each of the accused to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor, remarking that it would be a good thing to get them taken care of for the winter.
