TAYLOR MEMORIAL FUND.

PUBLIC MEETING ADJOURNED

The meeting of citizens called in connection with the Taylor Memorial Fund, which took place at the Borough Council Chambers yesterday, was very sparsely attended. The Town Clerk intimated that the Mayor was unable to attend on account of indisposition, and Mr. Pettde was also unable to be present, he having made a prior engagement. On the motion of the Rev. F. W. Chatterton, the Rev W. Grant was voted to the chair. Mr. Grants in his opening remarks, stated that he regetted that there was not a larger attendance. A circular letter from Mr. J. McCombs, secretary of the fund, was then read, and the Rev. F. W. Chatterton remarked that no doubt similar notices had been forwarded to other bodies in Gisborne, and some action was probably being contemplated by them, and, until they had decided what thye were going to do, it was perhaps unwise to do anything m the matter. Personallv lie would like to see the meeting adjourned for a fortnight so that they could ascertain what was to be done. He felt sure that such a small meeting did not represent all the local interest in the question. Mr T. E. Toneycliffe, in seconding the proposition to adjourn the meeting, said that he thought that it would be better to hold the meeting some evening so as to, allow members of the various labor unions to attend, as they had a. great interest in the question, as the late Mr. Tavlor had done so much m the cause of democracy.

' In reply to a question, the Rev,. J. A. Lochoi-e expressed the opinion that local labor unions would have received communications from the general secretary at Christchurch. .

It was finallv agreed to adjourn the meeting until o n.m. on Thursday, 17th inst.
