A SWIMMER SEVERELY BITTEN
Beware of fresh water eels. There is a common belief that the eel is a harmless denizen of our streams, but a recent incident has rather exploded tljat theory. The otlier day All’ J. JF; Wallis, ol Wellington, was bathing in that nice stretch of water at Ngaturi, where the liramea junctions with the 'Makuri Stream. He liad been swimming for a few minutes in deep water, when a slimy thing passed over one of his legs. He at one made for the bank, but bad only proceeded a few yards when lie felt the teeth of the eel fasten in the flesh be'md the left knee. He struggled gamely, and at 'ength succeeded in kicking off the eel with his right foot, and reaching** the bank. The shape of the eel’s jaw as outlined by the teeth marks still showed red and inflamed when shown to a reoorter on Saturday. The episode is also'vouched for by Mi 1 A. Eglinton, who was in company with Mr Wallis.
