A SPIELER CAUGHT.
LET DOWN LIGHTLY FOB, DOPING “ NEW CHUM.”
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A well dressed young man named John, alias William Marsden, appeared before the Stipendiary Magistrate to-day on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person having no visible means of support. Tho man was shown-to be a confidence trick swindler, and was sent to gaol for three months. Prederick William Bradshaw, a recent arrival from England,-statod that while comiog to New Zealand he met defendant and other man at a hotel in Hobart. Defendant said he was possessed of groat wealth, and offered to givo witness £SO if ho would produce’what money he had. Witness had £3O, and this eventually passed into defendant’s keeping. Witness was placed on a steamer for tho Bluff, and given os pocket money. Detective Broberg stated that on interviewing accused here be had suggested that witness should participate in the proceeds of any simitar swindling that might be done. Tho Magistrate said defendant had evidently come to tho country to swindle people, and would have to go to gaol.
