GISBOBNE DEFEATS BLUFF HILL

The Bluff Hill bowlers arrived from Napier on Saturday morning, and played j throe games with tho Gisborno Club. -Lho I visiting teams wore skipped by Messrs Kennedy, Laing, and Tabutoau. Tho first I round was playod before luuoh, Laing and Kennedv being defeated by Sirnson and Massey." The latter, though playing n I sterling game, was assisted by a considerI able amount of luck. Tuhuteau defeated Witty by 23 to 19. I Massey and Kennedy played on 0,p.. -L I rink (now green)* Tho following is tho I result of the play : FIEST BOUND. Bluff Hill Gisborne. I Webor Lomax Kovans Adair Doan * Nicholas Kennedy, skip 14 Massey, skip 21 Massey took command from tho start, aud all his men playing well never loft the issue in doubt. On tho 7th head tho score was 9—2, and on tho 14th head 15 7, Both sides soored evenly from that out, and the game finished—Gisborno 21, Bluff Hill 14.

On the 14th head Simson was 27 to Laing’s 9. On the second last head the score was 36 to Hi Laing sooring 2 on the last head.

Then I Tabuteau went ahead and scored 6 on the I next 3 heads, being 10 to 4 on the 7th I head. Witty soored 1, 3 and 4on the I next 3 heads, and Tabuteau 3 on the next I head, making the score on the 11th head, Bluff Hill 13, Gisborne 12. On the 14th I head Bluff Hill had a lead of a single, I which Witty reduced on the next head. I On the 17th head Bluff Hill had 18 to Gia--1 borne’s 17, but on the next head scorod 4. I Some splendid form was shown on the 19th I head, which was played on the full length lof the green, i Robertson with his first bowl laid the Jack and Bilton with his second secured the shot, but Robertson wont one better and again won the shot. Tabuteau had a load of 4 on the 19th head. Onjthe second last’bead Gisborne were lying 5, but Tabuteau- with his last bowl carried the jack and laid one. The game resulted—Bluff Hill 23, Gisborne 19. V SECOND ROUND. Laing 25 Witty 13

Laing and Witty met in tha second round, and another interesting game was witnessed. The scores were 7 all on the 7th head and 13 all on the 15th head. On the 16th head Laing scored 5, two on the 17th head and singles oa the following 3 heads, making the score on the 20th head : Bluff Hill 23, Gisborne 13. On the final head Laing scored 2, the result being— Bluff Hill 25, Gisborne 13. Massey 28 Tabuteau , 21 Masseyjand Tabuteau mat in this round On the 7th head the score was Gisborne 11

. BJufi Hill 5.' On tha 14th head Massey had scored IS to Tabuteau’s 11. On the 17th head Tabuteau scored 5, and brought his score to 17, and within 4 of hie opponent. Massey scored 2' on the next head and another 2 on the following head. On the 20th head Tabuteau scored 4. At this stage of the game Bluff tlill was leading by 1 point on the aggregate, but Massey scored 3 on the final head, winning the game and the round.

Simson 27 Kennedy 20 Simson met Kennedy. On the 7th head Simson was 13 to Kennedy’s 4, and on the 14th head was 19 to 13. On the second to last head Kennedy was 19 and Simson 27. Kennedy scored a single on the final bead, and the game resulted—Gisborno 27, Bluff Hill 20. 1

On the 11th, head Gisborne were 14 to 8, l3th head 16 to 10. The score on the 14th head ' was Simson 14. Tabuteau- 10. On the 16th head Simson was 21 to 13, and on the 19th head 26 to 17. On tbe second last head Simson scored 5. Simson was lying 3on the final bead, but Tabuteau drew the shot with a splendid bowl and scored a single, the game ending as above./ . Witty 21 Kennedy 33 On the 7th head Kennedy was 11 to Witty’s '6, and on the 9th hoad 14 to 8. Witty scored 4on the, 10th head. Kennedy scored a single on the next head, and 3on tbe 12th. The score on the 14th head wa3 Kennedy 19, Witty 15. On the 15th head Kennedy scored 4, and on the 26th 6, making the score Bluff Hill 29, Gisborne 15. Witty scored 4on tbo 17th. On the second last head Kennedy had scored 32 to Witty’s 21, and scoring a single on the final left the score Ksnnedy 33, Witty 21.

Massey 23 Lamg 17 On the 7th head M asß °y had s ° ol -' e d 10 to Laing’s 7. On the 10th head Massey was 11 to 9. On the 11th head scored 5, giving him a lead of 3, which Massey equalised on the 12th head, makmg the score 14 all. The scores on the 14th head

were Massey 17, Laing 14. On the 19th bead Massey was 29 to 17. On the second last head Massey scored a single, and 2 on the final, winning by 6 points.

SMOKE CONCERT. A smoke .concert was tendered to the visiting bowlers in the .Farmers’ Union Club rooms on Saturday evening, Mr J, A. Harding, President of the Gisborne Bowling Club was in tbe chair, and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. The toast of “ His Majesty the King ”

was drunk with musical honors. Mr Mo. Gibbon then sang “ The Gallants of England ” with good effect. I Mr J. W. Bright was entrusted with the 1 toast of the “ Bluff Hill Bowlers,” and in a hnmorous speech explained how his rink had been defeated in their throe games that day. He hoped that the good fellowship that existed between the Bluff Hill and Gisborne Bowling Clubs would long and he trusted that in a Bhort time the matches between the t£7o globs would be an annual fixture. Tho toast was eouClsd With tho names of Messrs Balter (President- of the Bluff Hill Bowling Club), Tabuteau, and Doing, Mr F. Teat gave a fine interpretation of ' “ For the JKing.” , < Mr Baxter, in responding to the toast Ot the visiting bowlers, expressed pleasure at the hospitality they had received, and referred to the local bowlers os Bports and real good fellows. Ho trusted, 'as Mr Bright suggested, that the fixture would become an annual one. Messrs Tabnteau and Doing also suitably responded. Mr W. J. Barlow wns heard to - great advantage in the song “ Bemember me no more.” , Mr Dinwiddie, in a neat spoeco, proposed the toast of tho Gisborne Bowling Club, coupled with tho names of Messrs I. S- Simson (vice-president)'and T. Adair (secretary), who suitably responded. . " >->« ' ' ■ / S® , ’' •

Mr J. W. Pottio proposed " Kmdrod Sports,” assoeiatod with tho names of Messrs Stock (golf) and Barlow (tennis). Messrs Stock and Barlow made suitable r °Songs wero contributed by Dr Buckoridgo and Messrs A. Zlaohanah, Jj.W. Witty, and H. E. Hill, Mr G. H. Gittos presiding at tho piano. Tho singing of “ Auld Lang Syne terminated a pleasant ovoning.
