COOK MEMORIAL
LETTER FROM HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR.
By the last Southern mail, Mr W. Gaudin, Secretary of the Cook Memorial Fund, recoived the following letter from Captain Dudley Alexander, A.D.C. to His Excellency tho Governor “ With reference to your letter of 30th July, relative to ‘ The Cook Memorial Fund,’ lam directed by His Excellency the Governor to forward you a cheque for £3 3s, and to inform you that it gives him great pleasure to see that a movement is on band to erect a memorial to Captain Cook. If wo wish to inspire tho rising generation with admiration for tho great and heroic deods of tho men of the past, we cannot afford to leave unnoticed the name of Captain Cook, of whom overy Englishman may justly be proud.” P.S.— I also enclose j£l Is from myself towards the fund.
POSTAL CONCESSIONS,
The Acting-Premier is so impressed with the importance of the movement in regard to the Cook Memorial that he has decided that all letters sent by the Committee aro to have free delivery through the post. Last evening, the Secretary, Mr Gaudin, received the following telegram from Sir Joseph Ward: “I have given instructions for you to have authority to frank in connection with the Cook Memorial.” A telegram to the same effect was also received from the Hon. Mr Carroll.
