SUBSCRIPTION CHAMBER CONCERT.

Lovers of classical music were accorded a rare treat at the Academy of Music last evening, when the second of the Subscription Chamber Concert, given by Messrs Sidebottom and Massey, was held. There was a largo attendance, and all present expressed themselves highly delighted with the programme that was presented. The opening instrumental trio, “ Op. 29, Novelletten,” was contributed by Messrs Sidebottom (piano), Massey (violin), and Parker (’cello), and was charmingly rendered. Mr H. D. Parker’s ’cello solo, “ Romance ” (Popper) was onoof the gems of the evening, and that gentleman was accorded hearty applauso for his finished rendering of the piece. Tho appearance of Mr Leo Buekeridge was looked forward to with interest, and his rendering of his first song, “ Myself When Young ” (Lehmann), was convincing proof of tho merits of the vocalist. The words of the song aro from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and the

setting justice to the merits of the composer. xi}® piece was exquisitely treated by Mr Buckeridge, and he was accorded a most enthusiastic encore. He was equally successful in his other numbers, “ Thou’rt Passing Hence ” (Sullivan) and “ ’Tis I ” (Pinsuti), which were given with deep feeling. Mr E.N. Sidebottom’s pianoforte solo was given in a finished manner. The piece selected was “ Op. 63, Fantasie Impromptu ” (Chopin), and a more appropriate number could not have been chosen, hearty applause being accorded the performer at the close. The trios “ Op. 63, Vivace, Adagio, Allegro ” (Schumann), “ Romance ” (Fesca), “ Op. 35, Norwegian Dances ” (Grieg), were given by Messrs Sidebottom, Massey, am Parker, whose playing was greatly appre

ciated and greeted with much applause, ai also was the number “ Op. 121, Minuet Lento, Allegro,” (Kalliwoda). Mr A. J. Massey’s violin solo, “ Op. 55, tjouvenii de Sorrento ” (Papini), was one of the most successful instrumental numbers that the Gisborne musical public has had the privilege of hearing for a long time, and it is pleasing to note that he was accorded a fitting reception. He gave a most masterly interpretation of the piece, and received a most enthusiastic encore. The concert, on the whole, was a most successful one, and the promoters, Messrs Sidebottom and Massey, are deserving of the thanks of the musical public for the enterprise they have displayed. We trust that the encouragement they have received will warrant them giving similar concerts nest year. Strangers who were present | last evening were loud in their praises of the concert, which would, they said, have j done credit to any of the larger towns of the colony.
