COAL VESSELS.

Only the faintest glimmer of hope can now be held out for the safety of the twenty-two men who went to sea in the steamer Quirang. A cablegram published elsewhere shows that an effort is being made to clear up any doubts as to the seaworthy condition of the collier, and at this stage it is pertinent to ask another question: Why was the steamer Balmain allowed to proceed from Newcastle to Gisborne in the condition that she was in ? It may not be a pertinent question to ask in connection with the Quirang, but the present is a suitable time for the asking of such questions. Is there no law in Australia to prevent a vessel being sent to sea in such a condition, It is to the credit of the New Zealand Government that the vessel should be so promptly bailed up, but is there to be no enquiry in the matter ? It would be well to have more light thrown upon these matters.
