OBITUARY.

A well-known identity in Gisborne, Mr George Feary, passed tq his long rest on Saturday morning, at the age of G 7. He had been a resident of Gisborne for a great many years, and, though his occupation was humble, he was ever a straight and honest man, who did a kind turn for many a poor fellow, and who was respected by all who know him. He had been in bad health for some time prior to his death. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of mourners, including leading townspeople. -.The service was conducted by the Bev. Canon Webb.

The esteem in which tho late Mr Fred E. Shugar wds held was made manifest yerterday, when a very large number of people assembled to pay their tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased. The body was taken from the Hospital to the wharf for shipment to Napier, and a great many people assembled to join in the sad procession. It was headed by a strong force of members of the Gisborne Rifles, under Captain Warren. Among the mourners were the proprietor and members- of the Herald staff, and representatives of local bodies and Friendly Societies. At the wharf shed' a short service was conducted by the Bev. J. Paterson, the Bechabite service being taken. Flags wore flying at half-mast, and in other ways marks of respect were paid. At St. Andrew’s Church'last night the Bev. 'J. G. Paterson referred to the fine qualities'of the young man,~whose character he warmly eulogised. 1 Death has recently caused sorrow in many’ homes, and at 20 to 4 yesterdaymorning it entered the household of Mr and Mrs Herbert, of Whataupoko, and;, their fourth son Harold Turner, nearly ten years of age, was taken from them. The lad had for some time complained of having a pain in his side, the pain- being brought on by exertion. The complaint was not thought to be of a serious order. About a fortnight ago Harbld had to take to his bed. His condition grew worse," congestion of the lungs setting in, and notwithstanding all the efforts that were made he sank and died. 'lf was found by I)r Hughes that the pain that had troubled the patient was caused by an internal abscess. The funeral is to loave the residence of the parents at 2.80 this afternoon.
