Japs. Still Hold Tiny Mariana Isle

(10 a.m.)

HONOLULU. July 4.

Five years after the end of the war 21 Japanese on a tiny mid-Pacific island are still holding out. A Navy communique today said that the island of Antahan in the northern Marianas was so small and unimportant it would not risk sending a landing party to take it by force. Japanese man machine-guns concentrated around Alahan’s harbour entrance.

The United States Navy has tried everything short of war to get them out. Pamphlets and food have been dropped from planes. Boats circle the island broadcasting over loudspeakers that the Second World War is over.

The Japanese are not convinced the communique added. The Navy hopes the Japanese will tire of their present existence and surrender.
