Radar Target’s Long Flight
Commenting on a report in Wednesday night’s issue that a piece of meteorological apparatus recently found at Ocotiki was thought to have drifted by air from Gisborne, the meteorological observers at Darton Field offer a different oninion. From the description given, tnev surmise that the pyramid shaped wooden obiect was a radar target used to attract the larger experimental ballons. The silver paper on the sides was for the purpose of reflecting signals from the balloon to compile atmospheric data. If this is correct, the target must have had a long flight, as appartus of this nature is used only at Whenuapai and Ohakea in the North Island, and at some South Island airports. V -
