Police And Strikers Clash In Sth. Italy

(10 a.m.) ROME, March 23. Police and strikers clashed at San Severo, in Southern Italy. Strikers thew a hand grenade and the ponce opened fire. Several people, including the police, were injured. Renewed outbreaks of fighting this afternoon resulted in the police sealing off the town. An unlimited curfew was declared. . Order was restored m San Severo after armoured troops smashed a Com-munist-led demonstration bv 5000 strikers who were protesting against the death of a worker at Parma who was shot bv the police. Fifteen police and three civilians were injured in the fighting, shooting and grenade bursts todav. Foftv arrests were made. Scattered riots were reported in seven other towns in the Foggia region. The situation is tense but under control Workers went back to their jobs over most of Italy today following the Communist-led 12-hour nation-wide strike which cost one life and sent scores to hospital. . The northern city of Parma carried on the strike for another day as a protest against the shooting of a demonstrator in a clash with police not squads yesterday.
