‘Have Been Building So-Called Welfare State’

"For the past 15 years we have been growing up a so-cailcd welfare state in New Zealand, and we now have generations rising who do not know the meaning of private enterprise,” said Mr. If. E. Schofield, of Matamata, addressing the Associated Chambers of Commerce this morning after his election as president for 1950-51.
A responsibility, he added, was on chamber members to show that the principles of private enterprise were worth lighting for.

R. C. Kellar (Nelson), Marlborough-Nelson-Westland zone, A. H. J. Wyatt (Invercargill) , Canterbury-Otago-Southland
zone. The next conference will be held at Timaru.
