British Ships Run Blockade On China Coast

(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyright.) (11 a.m.) HONG KONG, Aug. 15. Two British ships arrived at Hong Kong today after successfully running the Nationalist blockade at Shanghai and Tientsin respectively.

One was the 600 ton Edith Moller which is the first ship to enter Shanghai and safely leave since the blockade was imposed. . , , European officers declined to say how they evaded the blockade except that she entered port under the cover of darkness. They added that shots were fired across her bow when she was approaching Woosung at the mouth of the Whangpoo leading to Shanghai. The Communists made Captain R. Hall promise not to embark any “illegal passengers” and dozens of Communist officials daily visited the ship to see the promise was carried out. , The second blockade-breaking ship was the freighter Lady Wolmar which arrived from Tientsin. Officers said that when they left the ship and returned they were closely searched by soldiers who had been so indoctrinated with hatred of Europeans that they treated them contemptuously.
