People Flee From Homes Threatened By Forest Fires In S.W. France
(10.35 a.m.) PARIS. Aug. 15. The whole of Gironde Department South-West France, was ringed today by forest fires. The Prefect of Gironde has mobilised men from 16 to 65 years to fight the flames which are spreading fast because of the prolonged drought. Countless families are fleeing from threatened homes, taking what furniture and belongings they can. The roads have a long stream of caravans resembling the 1940 retreat when French refugees fled from the advancing German Army.
