PACIFIC FLEET TO BE STRENGTHENED
(11.30 a.m.) HONG KONG, Aug. 30. The British Pacific Fleet will be returned to its former strength as soon as possible, according to the Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Sir Denis Boyd, upon his return from Japan following exercises with the United States Western Pacific Fleet.
The Fleet was reduced last October due to the industrial crisis, but Admiral
Boyd said it was hoped within the near future to build up again to four cruisers and supplementary units, including destroyers and submarines. Admiral Boyd said Hong Kong would remain indefinitely the headquarters of the Fleet, "There will be no weakening of our commitments on the China coast or in South-East Asia from Manila to Malaya. We shall fulfil all our old duties.”
