R.S.A. AND EASTERN WIN IN SOCCER CUP SERIES
By "Forward” The opening- series of matches of Die P.B. Football Association for the Kirk and Stoncliam Cups were played on Saturday on the Childers Road Reserve. In the senior competition R.S.A. defeated Thistle by a comfortable margin and Eastern Union defeated Wanderers by the odd goal in seven. In the juniors Wanderers and Rovers defeated R.S.A. and Thistle respectively by three goal margins. Final Results Senior.—R.S.A. 4 v. Thistle 2; Eastern Union 4 v. Wanderers 3. Junior. —Wanderers 3 v. R.S.A. nil; Rovers 3 v. Thistle nil. Seven Goals Scored In the first spell Wanderers seniors made the play and kept the Eastern defence busy. A. Twaddle opened the score after 15 minutes, the ball striking the upright and glancing into the net. Shortly afterwards Eastern came with the equaliser from A. Arthur. From the kick off Wanderers set out with a further attack and were rewarded when R. Neilson found the net. Just before half-time the goal scored by J. Carlson put Eastern in the lead. After the interval Wanderers were hard pressed and L. Branson added another goal for Eastern with a fast ground shot which gave R. Brown no opportunity to save. Once again the Wanderers forwards endeavoured to add to their score and the Eastern goalie, C. Booth, was called on to save some fast shots. Shortly before the final whistle A. Twaddle headed the ball over for Wanderers and D. Elliott, the Eastern back, scored with a closein drive.
A. Waugh and D. Roe in the Wanderers defence were outstanding. The latter played gamely with an arm injury suffered some weeks ago. T. Edwards played his usual game feeding his forwards well. J. Watt, A. Twaddle, R. Neilson, and R. Huxtable, as well as J. Knight, who held the centre position, combined better than usual.
L. Branson, J. Carlson and A. Arthur were the best of the Eastern forwards, and K. Walker, A. Scott, D. Mulrooney and D. Elliott were sound in defence. Mr. A. Silvester was the referee. Barbour’s Hat Trick
The two leading teams in the championship competition, R.S.A. and Thistle, provided a fast game. The highlight was the success of R. Barbour, who scored three of the R.S.A. goals. The other came from J. Hepburn. Better combination was maintained by Thistle. A. Easton and L. Wilkinson scored the team’s only goals, as well as being the pick of the forward line. The R.S.A. defence was sound. K. Ford, A. and H. McCallum were the best of the R.S.A. units in defence, while R. Barbour and J. Hepburn were the pick of the forwards. J. Crawford, J. Easton and W. Bryan played well in the Thistle defence. Mr. W. Allen was the referee. Play By Juniors Once again Wanderers juniors proved superior to R.S.A. A picture goal was netted by R. Leslie from near the halfway line. Twigley and Hickman scored the other two: Niven, Morrow and Neilson, with the scorers, were the pick of the Wanderers eleven. Mr. A. Twaddle was the referee.
Rovers were too good for Thistle. Fletcher scored two goals for Rovers and Tennant one, the ball in the latter case striking a defender and entering the goal. Moffitt, McNaught, Wilkinson and Thomas were the pick of the Thistle side, as were McKenzie, Fletcher, Tennant and Sharpies for Rovers. Mr. J. Crawford was the referee.
