H. 5.0.8. BEAT MARIST : JUNIOR PLAYERS OUT

Both teams fielded juniors to make up their strength tor the senior game between H. 5.0.8. and Marist,' and the juniors played up to the occasion. The game was not an outstanding one for combination, but there was plenty of action and some good individual efforts were registered both among the torwards and backs in each side. On paper H. 5.0.8. looked like comparatively easy winners, but the Marist forwards scrummaged well and won the ball from a fair proportion of the set scrums and line-outs, also heeling well and breaking fast to spoil opportunities tor their opponents. They would have been rewarded better tor the openings they made if their backline had been more accurate in passing and handling, but they battled on well to the finish. The maroon pack lacked its usual sting, and though 1. Shaw gave his forwards a good lead there was some obvious reluctance to steam up the game. With juniors freely intermixed in the H. 5.0.8. rearguard there was not much doing in the way of combined attacks, and individual efforts were mainly responsible for the two tries which represented H.5.0.8.’s margin of six points at the finish, neither try being converted. J. Greig and. C. Gibson were the scoring members of the winning side. Mr. A. Sutton was the referee.
