HOCKEY AND INDOOR BASKETBALL TEAMS WIN IN WHAKATANE

Hockey and indoor basketball teams from the Gisborne district figured prominently in play in Whakatane on Saturday, despite the fatigue of the road journey commencing in the early morning.

The Poverty Bay men hockey representatives defeated Central Bay of Plenty by seven goals to nil. In. scoring one of his four goals the P.B. forward, L. Roderick provided one of the features of the game with a waist-high flick into the net after T. Turbitt had steadied the ball from a penalty corner. Another highlight was the goal scored by J. Roos, who capped a combined thrust from the twenty-five with four other attackers. The other P.B. scorer was Turbitt, who twice found the net.

The P.B. women representatives also played well and took a good share in the attack though unable to pierce the Central Bay of Plenty defence, the home side winning this game, three-nil.

In the indoor basketball series a combined Gisborne Colts team defeated Tauranga (A), 32-30 and Whakatane (A), 37-24, The Matelots, who play in the Gisborne B grade competition, took a 24-13 decision over Whakatane (B), but Jost, 15-30 to Tauranga (B).
