BOMBER’S BOLT FOR THE AZORES
NEW YORK, July 19. The mysteriouus privately owned Flying Fortress, which was forced down at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on July 11. took off yesterday under order to return to the United States but flew to the Azores instead, presumably bound for Palestine.
The plane had originally left the United States without filing the flight plan required for all aircraft leaving the country. Bad weather forced it down at Halifax, and following a report that the plane was en route. for Palestine, the Canadian authorities impounded it. They allowed it to take off again only on condition that it returned to the United States.
The pilot assured the authorities that he was going to Boston, but early today the aircraft landed at the Azores. Canadian Air Force officials said the plane was supposed to have had only enough petrol for the flight to the United States.
