SPECTACULAR FIRE IN GREYMOUTH
GREYMOUTH. July 19.
The Greymouth and Cobden Fire Brigades were called out early yesterday morning to deal with a fire which destroyed the Greymouth workingmen’s Club, a former 11-roomed boardinghouse in Alexander Terrace. By the time the'alarm was given the building was a mass of flames and the brigades had to concentrate all their efforts on saving adjoining house properties, both of which were damaged. The fire was the most spectacular seen in Greymouth for some years. In its elevated position on a hill, the fire was visible over the whole of the town and many hundreds of residents soon gathered. The caretaker of the club. Mr. G W Brown, who sleeps in the upstairs part of the building, was awakened by the barking of his dog to find the place enveloped in flames. He had intended going on holiday today and had two suitcases packed. These he threw out down the back stairs and only had time to grab his trousers and wrap a blanket round himself and make his way out of the building. Mr. Brown lost about £IOO in money which he had saved for his holiday.
