BROOMPARK IDLE: UNEVEN DISCHARGE AFFECTS STABILITY
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 20. Gangs employed in two holds of the sugar ship Broompark St Chelsea were dismissed last night when the uneven discharge of cargo threatened the ship’s stability. The holds were the only sections of the ship working and the Broompark is now completely idle. Two of her holds have been isolated until the Mountpark tribunal has announced its findings, and general unloading will not be resumed until they have been determined. The Broompark became involved in a hatch dispute on June 30 when unionists were dismissed from two holds for refusing to move the hatches by hand. These holds have not been worked since and the incident has been placed on the order of reference for the tribunal.
When normal waterfront work was resumed on Friday gangs were allotted to the two unaffected holds. Output during three working days was sufficine to affect the Broompark’s trim and the discharge was stopped to avoid unnecessary hull stresses. Both the holds still contain sugar.
COLLIER DELAYED AT AUCKLAND
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 20. A shipment of important West Coast coal allocations for Auckland was delayed by the refusal of the Auckland Watersiders’ Union to allow extra work on Saturday afternoon to enable the collier Omana to sail, on Saturday. The vessel was delayed at Auckland for two days to complete the unloading yesterday 7. She will sail for the West Coast for another cargo of coal. One hour’s extra work would have released the Omana on Saturday. The reason tor the action is believed to be that the union has in its books a resolution to refuse work to finish the Union Steam Ship Company's vessels.
LITTLE WORK FOR AUCKLAND “SEAGULLS”
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 19. Regular non-unionist waterside workers during the port dispute have had no engagements for over three weeks. Forty were employed this morning for the first time since the port returned to normal, but this afternoon they had to give way to unionists who became available when their engagements for other vessels expired.
