ENGINE CREW’S AMAZING ESCAPE
THROWN CLEAR OF BROKEN STEAM PIPE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 26. The engine crew of the derailed South Island express had an amazing escape from death. The driver and fireman both suffered from burns.
A steam cock on a pipe carrying "00 lb pressure of superheated steam was sheered, off in ihe cab. Had P ' men come in line with (he steam when it escaped they would have been killed instantly. This statement was made by the assistant. general manager of railways, Mr. T. R. Riesop, in Blenheim ' day. , He said he believed that the men must have been tumbled into one corner of the cab and so escaped the Mast. As rescue work was put under way in clearing the twisted, mangled wreckage of carriages it became increasingly apparent that many of the 115 passengers had miraculous «scapes. Medical teams and rescue parties who were early on the scene from Blenheiln and neighbouring districts were amazed as their work progressed that anyone could have emerged unscathed from such a shambles.
