ANNUAL MEETING B.M.S. ELECTS OFFICERS “I am pleased that tonnight we are inaugurating another season of musical enjoyment," said the president, Mr H. F. Wise, at the annual meeting of the Gisborne branch of the British Music Society at the music-room on Wednesday night. “Last year was a wonderful one musically, good progress being made, especially with the string orchestra, which we hope to expand this year wi h the introduction of more instrumentalists." Mr Wise commented b'iefiy unon the annual report, which wa, adopted. In speaking to the adoption of the balance sheet, he remarked that despite the expense of bringing artists to Gisborne. the society’s finances were in a good position. They were slightly down on the ptevious year but the committee took the view that they wo e not trying to ■•ccumuk-ue funds but to use them for the provision of better music. The balance sheet was adopted It was unanimously decided to keen the subscriptions at the same figure as in 1947. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr H. F. Wise; secretary. Miss D. Olsen: treasurer, Mr D. G. Dyer; auditor, Mr H. C. Gregory: committee, Mrs O. R. Olsen, Misses Margaret Allen, K. Salter, Messrs. H. Boagey. W. C. Kohn, T. Lyle, Meiklejohn and H. O. McFarlane. Indebtedness to President The indebtedness felt by all members to Mr and Mrr. Wise was voiced by Mr Dyer, who said he felt he spoke for everybody when he said that everything done for the society by the president and his wife was a credit to them and appreciated greatly by all. Mr Dyer’s sentiments were enthusiastically endorsed by the meeting. Thanks to the outgoing committee and officers for their work, to all performers and members assisting the society, were proffered by Mr Wise. Mr Owen Jensen, the well-known pianist, New Zealand composer, and music tutor for the Community Art service committee of the Auckland adult education centre wa s introduced bv the president. Mr Jensen gave details of how the Community Art Service committee worked and what could • S? 1 ! 6 establish and foster the arts in Gisborne.
