STAYERS' TRACK SUITS QUICK MARCH : EVEN LOT IN THE HERRIES MEMORIAL CUP AT TE AROHA

(Herald Special Service.) P v TGr fields necessitating two events having to be divided into beats made the acceptance for the Te Arolia one:hiy race meeting to be held in Te Arolia tomorrow. A dozen remain in the chief event, the Herries’ Memorial Cup, run over a mile and three furlongs, and a very even lot they appear.

The same applies to the middledistance Champion Hack Cup. in which there is an abundance of winning and placer form offering from the majority bf those carded. Judging by the semi-final and final gallops up north, the going should be fast, but the latest report says there is a probability of rain, but not sufficient to affect the tracks. RUAKAKA HURDLES Brantome after his defeat the other week will have to be taken on trust as it appears his injured knee at times is most troublesome. Diamond King has run one or two fair races this season, but when expected to show an improvement after a promising effort has failed. Kanui te Koa won at his last start, but pulled up lame so that continued hard going is not in his favour. Kilcommon ran second last Saturday so only needs to improve a little to collect a major prize. Sir Bian, who a few years ago was a first-class handicap winner, is a newcomer to hurdling. Default, the half-brother to Beau le Havre, has won over the battens and also this season has won on the fiat so that he seems dangerous. Red King has not raced since he won the Matangi Hurdles at Waikato last November so that if he is at all forward he may be as tough as any. Harris Tweed has been in the money in his last two starts. The remainder are not fancied to any extent. WAITOA HANDICAP A very big field is engaged in this event, which will be run in two divisions. The list is headed by last week’s winner, Magic Stride, so that he will be one of the expected. Diatomic is held in fair regard up north and has winning form to back up his chances, while Arcadia is another recent successful candidate. Gay Rosina, Sliahmaz, Golden Hero, (second in his only start this season and on the same track), and Fearless Wings on form have the best chances of any of the others, but included among the lower-weighted division there are one or two promising but inexperienced gallopers. JUVENILE HANDICAP In this event Golden Eulogy will bo attempting to win her fourth successive race and with this good form on her sheet is hard to pass over with 9.5. Regal Simon is reported to have improved since running second to Beau Noir at Rotorua earlier this month when he was made favourite but had every chance.

Strathfield is only a moderate, while Lady Finis was a disappointing failure last week, but perhaps will do better on this occasion as she has only had two races. Of the others, place form is offering on behalf of Ending and Marcher and for that reason they are the only remaining ones to be considered when trying to sift the chaff from the grain. AHERRIES MEMORIAL CUP EXETER (12), 9.8, last Saturday dead-heated over a slightly shorter course with 9.3, or 51b less than he is now asked to carry. On that occasion he looked the winner inside the distance, but weakened slightly over the last portion so the extra poundage and distance does not appear in his favour. The lucky Auckland Cuo winner, BALGOWAN (7), 8.12, is down 21b for his nowhere at Waikato a week ago, but maybe will be persuaded to do better over the furlong longer course. REGAL PRAISE (8), 8.3, won this event last year, being the first of four successive victories, but with 7.5 on her back, or 121 b. less than she has now been asked to carry. Ilor form this season has been below that of last season, but maybe she will strike winning form again at the same period of the racing season. GAY FAULT (5), 81. has only run one really good race this season and that was a surprise. FOXFABLE (4), 8.0, was in trouble early last week and then came home like a train for fourth. lAVO JIMA (3), 7.12, was fourth at Matamata earlier this month and Miat placing was prefaced by a win in a mile race on the concluding day of the A.R.C. summer meeting when he beat a fair field, including Exeter, whom he now meets at exactly the same weight. FOX BAY (1), 7.7, winner of the Rotorua Cup, but last Saturday was not in the picture at the finish of the big race at To Rapa. SILVER LIGHTING (G), 7.5. on spring form would be a lightweight consideration. SWANEE (9), 7.2. also is not passed over without being given a lightweight's chance. QUICK MARCH (10), 7.2, ran a fair race last Saturday at Waikato and may be given a chance this time . He is of the staying type and the Te Arohn track is iust under a mile and a quarter in circumference, with a run iome of about 50 yds. short of two furlongs and a half so it can be classed as a staver’s track. It is for this reason that this three-year-old is being considered in a favourable light now.

Worm Guide For Races

ween. Rok;!~!o has shown improvement in private on his previous form, but was nowhere the first day. Little is known of the others, most of whom have no place form. NOLAN HACK CUP This race lias always been an interesting event. Mister Beau, with a second and first in his last two starts, must appeal. Omar Ithyyam has three unplacings against him of late, but before that looked above the average and back to hack class may make retribution. Balintorc is passed over in favour of BafTles Ilex-, who may prefer this to the chief event. Square Dink failed a week ago when well backed, the same applying to Master Fox. Lord Pilot staged a great finish with Mr. Beau last Saturday, when both came home really impressively. Morea Fox, third over seven furlongs last Saturday, may do better over the longer course. Dawn March will need to do better than in the Highweight. Mr. Pym, Olivntt, Halcairn, Beguile, and Night Charm (corning down in the weights), are outside possibilities. *W AIM ATE HANDICAP Brown Derby, winner of the sprint last week, is an absentee tin's time, but AGGRAVATION, CRESSIDA and PARK KOVAL, second, third and fourth respectively, are again engaged. The first-mentioned is up 71b, Crcssida •11b. and Park Royal 21b on last week's weights so that these three claim ist notice at the moment, with Crcssida also engaged in the mile and a quarter. The first day THEOCRITUS could io no better than eighth, so with the same weight again will need to make a substantial improvement, but an easier track may be to his liking. MALLOW, a non-starter the first day, on Wanganui form, would be a possibility, but on the same form SHIRAZ is not a fancy. The three-year old filly FAULTINA if drawn better than she has been ol late would enter calculations, as also would BRA MERTON on his first’s impressive hack success. The remainder on recent showing hardly enter the argument. INAHA HACK HANDICAP Franada at 9.9 was first a d second respectively at Wanganui, being up aib on his second day’s run. Bramerton has lumped from 8.6 to 9.4 and so for that reason his party may select the open sprint in which he has 321 b less. Lady Merit is running consistently and honestly and has come down lib for her nowhere the first day.

Retrieve on his unplacing at Wellington with 8.7 will not be a strong fancy now with 8.8, but then again in the Wellington Stakes was third to Great Trek and Magical with B.G while behind him was Tauloch. C. 12. Travel King failed last Saturday, while Cornwall Park the same dav won the Trial. Follow Suit, General Rule and the disappointing Fine Flavour read as well as any of the others.
