TRIAL MARRIAGES

OPPOSED BY DOCTOR SYDNEY, Feb. 7. Condemning trial marriages a former British Medical Association president during the week advocated long courtships and short engagements. He was lecturing in the Church of England marriage guidance series now being repeated for the third time. Dean Barton Babbage, organiser of the lectures, admitted he had known his wife only nine weeks before marriage. Advising against trial marriages, the doctor said: “One of the worst features of Hitlerite Germany was that in concentration camps human beings were experimented upon. “A trial marriage is Ihe same, except in degree—nobody should be permitted to experiment on anyone clse’s life. “Not only illegitimacy and the spread of venereal disease are to be considered as consequences- of free love, but neuroses caused by worry and insecurity." A soldier whose wife had left him after six weeks of marriage, the doctor said, had been unable to understand her saying the marriage Was not physically a success. He had had experience with nearly 50 women, but needed education on the physical side of marriage. Women predominated slightly at the lecture.
