RESCUERS FACE GRIM SCENE; CRIES OF INJURED SUDDEN DISASTER; PEOPLE TRAPPED IN CARRIAGES |p a j BLENHEIM, February 26. Six people are known to be dead and 37 others are in hospital following the v/orst railway smash in the South Island for many years. Within a matter of seconds several carriages of the Soulli Island Alain Trunk ovnrcss. which left Blenheim at 10.40 yesterday morning lor Christchurch, mpic reduced to a shambles when the engine left the line on a curve in a cutting 22 miles south of Blenheim. For hours afterwards rescuers worked feverishly to rescue the trapped passengers from the twisted wreckage.
The accident occurred with such suddenness 1 Tint many of the passengers remember no more than that at one moment all was normal and the next they were literally thrown from their seats with their carriages splintered and twisted and with indescribable wreckage all around them.
