RAILWAY SERVICES

INADEQUACY ALLEGED AID TO BRITAIN FREIGHT >'(P.A.) WANGANUI, Feb. 25. The inadequate railway services are creating a serious transport bottleneck land hindering, the aid to Britain campaign, according to the Wanganui prolyincial executive of Federated Farmers. Mr J. R- L. Hammond declared that the railways freight system was quite inadequate and outmoded. He quoted the district traffic manager as saying that because of the 40-hour* week thousands of wagons were immobilised from the Fridays till about 11 a.m. on the Mondays through the lack of unloading facilities during the week-ends. The solution suggested by Mr S. J. i Maundrell was that the restrictive asIpects of the five-day, 40-hour week i would be overcome by starting some 'shifts on Friday nights. The executive decided to point out ■to the Aid to Britain Committee that I the greatest -single bottleneck in inI creasing production was the lack of sat■'jsfactory railway 'facilities.
