Assault, "the clubfooted comet,” a champion believed to be unique among racehorses in that he had a crippled loot, lias been retired from the turf following the discovery that he burst an osslet (a growth on the ankle) in the Midcnor Handicap on Saturday in which lie ran fifth. Assault’s career nearly ended in 1943 when lie stopped on a surveyor's stake which drove into his right forefoot. This caused a permanent injury which made it necessary for him to wear a specially-made built-up shoe. Despite this malformation, lie went on to increase his earnings to (126,629 dollars, making him the third ranking money-winner in the world.
