CLIMBED TWO MOUNTAINS IN 24 HOURS

(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 21. Success was achieved at the. second attempt yesterday by two members of the Taranaki Alpine Club, Messrs. K. Rear, New Plymouth, and N. llatwell, Palmerston North, to climb both Mount Ruapehu and Mount Egmont in 24 hours. They left the Chateau at midnight on Sunday night and, after encountering icy conditions that necessitated the use of crampons, reached the summit of Ruapehu at 6.30 a.m. The ice slowed them on the descent on the Ohakune side, but they were at Ohakune at 11.30 a.m. They went by taxi to the Karioi emergency landing ground from where Mr. Kear piloted a New Plymouth Aero Club Tiger Moth to New Plymouth airport at Bell Block, via Wanganui. After a quick meal at the North Egmont hostel, they began the ascent of Mount Egmont at 5.15 p.m., reached the summit at 8.20 p.m. and descended to Dawson Falls hostel at 11 p.m. Both were footsore but otherwise in good condition. Mr. Hat well had made 18 ascents of Mt. Egmont since Christmas and both said they had boon at the peak of fitness before the climbs.
