BRILLIANT STAKES WIN MELBOURNE, Feb. 23. Royal Gem won the Futurity Stakes 'brilliantly at Caulfield on Saturday. | Carrying 10.2, Royal Gem ran the seven • furlongs in 1.24 J, only a quarter of a • second outside the course record. On the rails before the home turn, Royal !Gem was edged back and to win he had to move to the outside and make his burst in the centre of the track. Royal Gem has established himself as ,the most versatile horse in Australia. [He won on Saturday by a length and a half from Star Port with Money Moon a length and a quarter away, third. Sydney’s champion, Columnist, finished 'only eighth. ;« Ungar proved himself Victoria’s best ttwo-year-old when he won the Merson [Cooper Stakes from Scotwyn and Head 'Mistress.
