RUATORIA FUNERAL PASSING OF SCHOLAR {Herttf Correspondent.) An outstanding young membe* ot the Maori race. Mr. Richard Herewini, aged 20, only *on vi Mr. and Mrs. P. Herewine, Hicks Bay, died recently and the funeral took place at Ruatoria. The deceased held a tcholarship at St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, where ha took a great interest in sport, representing St Pat’* at erickef and Hugby in the first team*. In a welcome addressed to the Very Rev. L. R Evatt, S.M., rector of tire college, and two of his staff,Fathers G. J. Head, S.M., and A. S Ward, S.M., who attended the funeral, Sir Apirana Ngata was appreciative of the fact that their very presence at the funeral was an indication of the high esteem in which Dick Herewini was held as a 'member of the Maori race.

, At a luncheon in the Uepohatu Memorial Hall after the service, at which , about 200 cuests were present, expresi sions of sympathy and sorrow were voiced by Sir Apirana, the Very Rev. ! L. R. Evatt, Father Murray, of the Mill I Hill Maori Mission, Mr. H. Maynard, ! Muriwai. and many of the Maori ciders of the East Coast. The funeral service was conducted in both the Maori and European languages by Father Murray An address made at the graveside by the Verv Rev. L. R. Evatt likened Dick Herewini to 2/Lieut. Ngarimu. V-C.. in courage and loyalty. He bravely faced death and bore the sufferings of his long illness with intrepid spirit, said the rector of St. Patrick’s. “In his short life he was a shining example to all, teaching the lesson that our eyes must not be fixed on the transient things of this life, but on the eternal things of God and the life hereafter,” said the Very Rev. L. R. Evatt.
