CHAINING ALLEGED
COOK ISLANDS DISPUTE TRADE UNION PARLEYS (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Dec. 16. Concern has developed in administrative and union quarters as the result of reports of labour unrest in the Cook Islands and the position is to be discussed this afternoon between representatives of the Government and the trade union movement. National officials of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union held a discussion this morning with the New Zealand Federation of Labour and representatives of both organisations are expected this afternoon to meet Mr. A. G. Osborne, Parliamentary under-sec-retary, who has much to do with union affairs.
A report received by unionists in New Zealand alleges that 14 members of the Cook Islands Progressive Association were recently chained to the courthouse at Manihiki island following a dispute involving a copra schooner. It is also alleged that the Maui Pomare was held up for two days at Rarotonga and there was a further refusal to work the ship at Aitiitaki.
