MAGISTRATE’S DENIAL
BIAS AGAINST STUDENTS ONLY ONE CONVICTION SYDNEY, Sept. 18 Of the 13 University students charged following the demonstration outside the Dutch Consulate on July 25 only one was convicted. The cases, all of which were defended, were marked by exchanges between the magistrate and counsel for the defence in which counsel accused the magistrate of showing bias against the students. In several cases the charges were found proved, but the students were discharged without a conviction being entered. “Before disposing of these cases I wish emphatically to deny that I have shown any bias against the defence,” said the magistrate in delivering his reserved judgment. “I stand by every act and every statement made by me in this matter. The charges made against me are without the slightest foundation in fact.’
