HELP FOR CHINESE
N. ZEALANDERS’ PART DISPATCH OF SUPPLIES BIG JOB UNDER/TAKEN SHANGHAI, Sept. 19. At least 10 New Zealanders are now engaged in assisting UNRRA in distributing over 2,500,000 long tons of supplies which it has brought into wardevastated China. Included in this undertaking are hundreds of tons of New Zealand goods ranging from ploughs to towboats, canned eels and sewing thread. New Zealand livestock is also being distributed throughout the country to help restock herds depleted by the war. Four of the New Zealanders are from Wellington. They are Mrs F. M. Duncan, an assistant in the reports and records office which checks on the receipts of supplies and their distribution out of Shanghai. She was married _at the British Consulate to an Australian, Mr. E. Duncan, an UNRRA legal assistant. Mr. C. Plank is a distribution officer in Hankow, supervising the utilisation of all supplies arriving in Central China.
Miss K. Robinson, Upper Hutt, works in China and Miss J. Young is finance officer in the UNRRA office in Nanking. Other New Zealanders are Mrs. E. W. Catt, Auckland, an assistant in the administrative services office in Shanghai which handles billeting, transport and other services for UNRRA personnel. She married Mr. L. J. Catt, an Englishman, also working for UNRRA in China. They plan to live in England when their duties with UNRRA are completed. Miss P. Heap, Levin, works in the regional accounting office in Shanghai, and Miss L. Tomsett, Wanganui, is an assistant in the payrool section in the Shanghai office. Mr. A. Shackleton. Gisborne, is an UNRRA industrial rehabilitation officer in Formosa giving technical advice on the restoration of industries destroyed by the war. Mr. W. Huse, Heretaunga, is a livestock specialist who travels throughout China teaching Chinese farmers how to care for livestock. Miss P. Cross. Feilding. is an assistant in the travel section arranging air and surface journeys.
